Fall is a wonderful time to experience the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve in Alaska. Explore a dynamic wilderness dotted with hot springs, ancient lava flows, and the largest maar lakes in the world. Ramble across tundra seeking muskox, caribou, and signs of ice age life. The Bering Land Bridge provided a pathway for plants, animals, and people to cross from old world to new. Today local residents use this land just as their ancestors have for generations.Photo: National Park Service

On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted. Today the National Park Service, its volunteers, and its partners work to honor their sacrifice and to try to understand more fully the legacy of Flight 93 and the other events of 9/11.Photo from the Flight 93 National Memorial: Tami A. Relish in a lovely picnic under vivid autumn maples of New England or a crisp morning stroll surrounded by golden aspens of the Mountain West. You can also count on exceptional fall colors along almost any section of the 2,184 mile (3,514 km), 14 state Appalachian National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, but just about every state has some special place for you to discover the beauty of fall.Click here to see a list of places you can experience autumn in the great outdoors on any of the federal public lands!Photo of Rocky Mountain National Park by Steven Sawusch
