Established on this day in 2000 and twice expanded, California Coastal National Monument protects more than 20,000 rocks, islands, exposed reefs and pinnacles along the California coastline, as well as 7,924 acres of public land onshore. While millions of people admire the monument from beaches, bluffs and watercraft, it also provides important habitat for seabirds and marine mammals. From environmental education to water recreation to simply enjoying a gorgeous Pacific sunset, the spectacular interplay of land and sea is an experience that creates lasting connections between people and nature.
