It’s captivating to witness Katmai National Park and Preserve’s magnificent brown bears catching a nutritious meal, thanks to the healthy population of sockeye salmon the Bristol Bay ecosystem supports. As anticipation builds for Fat Bear Week, we can all tune into the bearcam and experience front row seats to the impressive feasting.

Katmai National Park and Preserve is world-renown for brown bear viewing. About 2,200 brown bears are estimated to inhabit the park, and more bears than people are estimated to live on Alaska Peninsula. For those who visit the park (or are frequent viewers of #BearCam), they can learn about a bear’s behavior – like this mama and her three cubs standing up. Bear cubs often imitate their mother’s every move, and standing on hind legs allows bears to get a better view or smell of what’s around them. Photo by A. Ramos, National Park Service.

That feeling when everything goes as planned …

Get a front row seat as brown bears fight for prime spots to feast on the largest sockeye salmon run in the world on #BearCam at Katmai National Park in Alaska. The salmon are jumping and the bears are hungry 🐻 🐟 – visit daily explore.org/bears to see all the action! Video by explore.org.

Nothing beats spotting wildlife in the great outdoors, but just because you’re stuck inside doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the adventure. Some of the best wildlife cams are on America’s public lands, places that Interior works every day to protect for future generations.

Don’t mess with this mama bear at Katmai National Park! 🐻

Cubs often mimic the behavior of their mothers. This is one way they learn important survival skills. They eat what mom eats, investigate what mom investigates, and may copy her actions around other bears. 273 and her spring cub approached Brooks Falls on July 16 and encountered a single adult female. 273 reacted defensively to back down the other bear. Her cub decided to help mom.
