Too big to be ignored, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve is the same size as Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park and Switzerland combined. Rising from colorful ocean inlets to the second-tallest mountain in America – 18,008 foot-tall Mount Saint Elias – our largest national park is home to mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, forests, rivers, lakes, wildlife and people living off the land as they have for centuries. To sum it up, this park is epic! Photo by Neal Herbert, National Park Service.

Happy Birthday to us! The U.S. Department of the Interior was officially created on March 3, 1849. For 170 years, Interior’s mission has expanded to include protecting and managing our natural resources and cultural heritage, providing scientific solutions and honoring trust responsibilities to our nation’s first people. With public lands being what we’re best known for, instead of candles on a cake, we’ll celebrate with sunlight glowing on a gorgeous mountain. We’re back online and honored to continue sharing the beauty and wonder of America’s public lands. As all of the government reopens, we want to thank those respectful and protective of these important places during the shutdown. Many employees worked without pay and members of the public volunteered to keep public lands safe and clean, and to ensure they’ll continue to be a proud legacy for future generations. We are so grateful to our devoted employees, volunteers, partners and contractors who continue to inspire through their dedication to Interior’s mission.
